The High-Temperature Dynamic Water Pressure Scour Method was originally invented to simulate stress loss on wet pavement when subjected to vehicle loads. This test involves placing compacted asphalt mixture specimens into a sealed container, submerging them in water, and heating to a target temperature. The dynamic water pressure difference is generated by compressing the sealed container's volume, allowing water to penetrate the mixture's pores more effectively compared to the traditional boiling method.


The asphalt mixture’s performance degradation after water exposure is evaluated using:

  • Splitting tests

  • Dynamic modulus tests

  • Density measurements

  • Visual inspections


This method has been standardized by the ASTM D7870 and AASHTO TP140 testing protocols. Since its introduction to China, numerous research institutions have adopted it, leading to its planned inclusion in the latest edition of the "Highway Engineering Asphalt and Asphalt Mixture Test Regulations".
